On April 17, 2025, torrential rainfall from Storm Hans triggered severe flooding and landslides across northern and central Italy.
The regions most affected included Piedmont, Lombardy, Veneto, and Emilia-Romagna, where rivers overflowed and infrastructure was damaged.
In Piedmont, the city of Turin and nearby towns like Rubiana faced flash floods and landslides, prompting widespread emergency response.
The River Po surged nearly five meters within 24 hours, breaching its banks and causing red alerts in multiple provinces.
At least three people were killed, including a 92-year-old man in Monteu da Po who drowned in his home.
Two other victims died when their vehicle was swallowed by a sinkhole in Valdagno, in the Veneto region.
Landslides were reported in Biella, Vercelli, Rubiana (Piedmont), Belluno and Vicenza (Veneto), and Sondrio and Lecco (Lombardy).
Emergency services conducted more than 90 interventions in Turin and Ivrea, addressing blocked roads, flooding, and downed trees.
Over 700 firefighters were deployed across affected areas to assist in rescue operations and damage control.
Heavy snowfall in the Alps, caused by the same storm system, disrupted transport and led to power outages in higher elevations.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, with more rain expected during the Easter weekend, increasing the risk of further floods and landslides.
