Notes and Rest Values | Learning the Basics

In this video, AIMM instructor Vitali Tkachenka discusses the Music Theory basics regarding notes and rests values.

Notes represent sound and rests represent silence, but it is important to understand that each note has a particular length of time that you must adhere to.

In this lesson, Vitali discusses:

Whole notes = 4 beats

Whole rest = 4 beats of silence

Half notes = 2 beats

Half rest = 2 beats of silence

Quarter note = 1 beat

Quarter rest = 1 beat of silence

Then he breaks down notes and rests that are shorter than one beat.

Eighth note = 1/2 of a beat

Eighth rest = 1/2 a beat of silence

Sixteenth note = 1/4 of a beat

Sixteenth rest = 1/4 of a beat of silence

Each beat of sound or silence can also be determined by the number of clicks on your metronome.

In contemporary music theory, notes shorter than sixteenth notes are still utilized, but it is important to grasp a basic understanding of these main notes and rests first.

It is important to know that these notes and rests do not relate to speed. They demonstrate sustainability.
