Ranks hierarchy is Captain, Chief officer, 2nd officer, 3rd officer, Deck cadets, Chief Engineer, 2nd Engineer, 3rd Engineer and 4th Engineer followed by ETO and Electrical officers.
Duties of the officers have been described in the video where captain is overall incharge and his job is mainly to keep the team together and keep a ship happy.
Chief officer has to look after cargo operations, he is the safety officer, ballast control officer, Garbage officer ( manage the garbage record book ). He also takes of ships LSA FFA ( life saving appliances and Fire fighting appliances ) . Todays times hes also the CRM ( cyber risk management officer ).
2nd officer is incharge of navigation, bridge equipment and medicals.
Chief engineer is a very important man on the ship and heads the entire technical of the vessel and other engineer officers report to him.
Ship is considered an unsafe place and situational awareness is a must for all officers. Accidents may occur hence companies maintain very strict international standards.
