Alco to the Rescue

SteamRanger operates on a former SAR branch line from Mt. Barker to Victor Harbor, South Australia. On Oct. 8, 2017 a steam excursion to Strathalbyn was stranded when its steam loco struck an SUV at a level crossing. Alco DL500B 958 was dispatched from Mt. Barker to rescue the stranded train. I was lucky to catch these events. The operation is broad gauge 5' 3" or 1600 mm, often known as "Irish gauge"
