8 Animals That Can Actually KILL a Lion

What’s up Fact Junkies! In today’s video, you’re going to discover 8 Animals That Can Actually KILL a Lion. Better stick around for #1 because this animal is not what you would expect! Lions weigh roughly 2 and a half times as much as us humans, and can jump over 3 times higher. By sheer math alone, that makes them 7.5 times stronger than any human. To kill their prey, lions use their powerful jaws to snap the animal's neck or strangle it to death. And although they’re termed kings of the Savannah due to their superiority over other predators, the mighty lion can sometimes become the victim of its intended prey. Number 8 Porcupine

Surprised? So were we when we learned that these little rodents are secretly lion killers. They may seem harmless, but porcupines HAVE been known to kill lions in the past, as well as leopards and hyenas. They don’t hunt them or anything like that, but when approached by a mighty predator such as a lion, they won’t hesitate to release some of their dangerous trademark quills as a defense mechanism. If a lion gets too close, those quills can cause nasty wounds that eventually lead to deadly infections. Check out this clip of seventeen hungry lions crossing paths with a tiny porcupine in the South African savannah in the middle of the night––the outcome is not what you would think! This tenacious little porcupine proved that even a whole pride of lions is no match for a brave rodent armed with quills on its back. Thankfully for the lions, no member of the price was killed in this instance. But these mighty wildcats sure lost face on that particular night! And if porcupines blew you away, just wait until you meet lion killer #1!

Number 7 Crocodile

There’s a reason lions instinctively fear drinking at rivers. A lion pride may occasionally attack smaller crocodiles for food, but a larger crocodile will easily take a lion drinking at the water's edge or crossing its river. A lion might try to claw at a crocodile’s armored body, but once the massive reptile manages to snap its jaws around a lion’s leg, it’s guaranteed over for the wildcat. Take the 20-foot, 2000-pound Nile saltwater crocodile for example. A crocodile that size can bite down with three times the force of a great white shark and is pound for pound way stronger than any lion who thinks he’s too savage to fear a reptile. Such a massive reptile would have no problem dragging a lion into water and drowning it to death. Some saltwater crocodiles have even been known to take down prey as formidable as sharks and black rhino––a lion in comparison is a piece of cake.

Number 6 Hyena

If we told you one of these scavenging animals can actually take on a lion, the hyena’s wouldn’t be the only ones laughing. While it’s true that lions are larger and stronger than hyenas, Hyenas outnumber lions and use their larger populations to compete with lions for food. The two have had a long-standing rivalry, and the practice of killing each other's young has become commonplace between these two mortal enemies. So at the very least, a Hyena can kill a lion cub––but what about a full-sized wildcat? Well, sometimes, smarts beats strength. And while hyenas have often been depicted as slobbering, dim-witted fools that can’t stop laughing, recent studies show that they’re actually pretty good problem-solvers, and far smarter than lions. One study even showed that they can count, putting their cognitive abilities right on par with some monkeys. On that note: check out this Hyena using its skill to take down a buffalo by its balls. We’ve never seen a lion do that! Now if a group of Hyena’s managed to distract a lion while one of them crept up from behind... well, you can probably guess how that would end for the lion!
