Painting the Portrait in Oil by Michelle Dunaway

I Love creating a portrait by starting from the focal point of the eyes and working my way outward to the peripheral elements of the face. Although there is no preliminary drawing, I am measuring the shapes optically while laying down mosaics of color and comparing each new stroke against a previous established shape in the drawing. Working this way keeps me enthused and attentive throughout the painting process and makes me feel like a kid again because I get to see a face emerge from the canvas as I'm progressing.
