INSERT WITH SCHEMA EVOLUTION DATABRICKS | New Feature| IoT Pipeline Example

In this video, we explore a new feature introduced in Databricks Runtime 18.1 BETA:

INSERT WITH SCHEMA EVOLUTION INTO

This feature allows Delta tables to automatically evolve their schema when new columns appear in incoming data.

Instead of manually running ALTER TABLE statements, Databricks can automatically detect schema changes and update the table structure during INSERT operations.

In this tutorial we demonstrate the feature using a real-world IoT manufacturing scenario where machines send temperature telemetry during production. Later, a manual_stop_flag column is introduced when operators gain the ability to manually stop machines.
