The Works of God

A crowd of people who had heard Jesus teach come up to Him and ask, “What must we do, to be doing the works of God?” (John 6:28). They were convinced Jesus was a prophet from God and they wanted to know how they should be living their lives in order to be doing the works of God. This was a Jewish crowd, so they probably expected him to say something like “What did Moses command you?” Or “Remember the Sabbath and keep it holy.” But instead, "Jesus answered them, 'This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he has sent'” (John 6:29). Jesus told them that the work they should be doing is believing. He talked about faith. And he adds in verse 40: “For this is the will of my Father, that everyone who looks on the Son and believes in him should have eternal life” (John 6:40). Our first priority is faith in Jesus, and then we can talk about how to obey the things He taught us to do.
