Handheld Router Carving out words & letters freehand routing techniques

Handheld Router carving out words & letters using freehand routing techniques.
Using the CNC router bits with reducing collet in a Makita router Im carving out the letters for the 'Luci' piece of fan art I made recently.

I set the depth and lock the router into position. As its only a depth of about 5mm then using the plunge function would be dodgy and far better to tilt the router in an out of the work by lifting the entire unit.
Let the router get up to full speed, then drop it in, it can grab if not fully up to speed. When lifting it out hold it up until the router comes to a full stop before laying it down. Lay it down on its side so it doesnt mark or damage your work. These bits can be v.sharp and pointy so watch catching it with your hands.

Actually moving the router once youve got it in your work is easy enough, the bits are small and running fast enough that you can work in any direction. Pulling the router towards you works well as you can see the line youre following and you have a lot of control over it.

I do it all in one pass rather than multiple shallow passes, going back over your design a 2nd,3rd time increases your chances of going off line and making mistakes. Ive used these bits to a depth of 12mm without problems.

To clear out i did small circular motions using the same bit as they were just that bit too small to use a upwards spiral.
