Why are African languages Termed ‘Vernacular’? | Isaya Yunge | TEDxOysterbay

NOTE FROM TED: TEDx events are independently organized by volunteers. The guidelines we give TEDx organizers are described in more detail here: http://storage.ted.com/tedx/manuals/tedx_content_guidelines.pdf

The world vernacular languages itself reveals the symptoms of the colonial project. African languages were downgraded to ‘’the vernacular’’ a term more suitable for a regional dialect than a nation’s language, with its own history, politics, literature and science and technology.

In today’s technology-driven economies, the gap between the haves and have-not will widen, with no known path towards closing it. Africa’s innovators need to think globally and act locally by developing AI-driven automation and voice command that uses Africa’s local languages. Tackling this challenge will require a combination of clear-eyed analysis of Africa’s culture, linguistic heritage, and philosophical examination of what matters in our lives, a task for both our minds and our hearts. Africa’s languages are Ubuntu for a world in which humans not only coexist alongside AI but thrive with it.
