Friedrich Merz fails to secure majority in first round of the German Chancellor election | DW News

Friedrich Merz has failed to clear a first hurdle to be the new chancellor of the country because he didn't get the majority required to become new leader.

He secured 310 votes in favor in a secret ballot, six fewer than the required majority of 316. The parliament has 630 members in total.
