Doyle Sailmakers Anomaly Headboard system - Leopard 48 catamaran mainsail

The Doyle Anomaly Headboard system is the only reliable solution to handling large flat-top mainsails on cruising boats. Without a system to allow the head ring to fall away from the mast, the gaff (top) batten supporting the flat top will stay diagonally up in the air. On race boats, crewmembers can scramble up to un-pin the headboard or remove the batten, but this isn't an option on larger cruising cats where the gooseneck can be seven feet up in the air -- and the headboard twelve! The Doyle Anomaly headboard can be retrofitted to existing sails or supplied on new sails. It guides the halyard through a strong pin on the head of the sail, and to or through a block on the headboard car. As the halyard tightens, the Doyle Anomaly system carries the head of the sail to the headboard, and then down over the sheave, allowing the head block to engage the headboard pin in the sail, providing a strong, mechanical lock to hold the head in place. The metal head block holds the sail in place, with the halyard merely controlling the angle of the head block. When lowering, the bottom end of the gaff batten reaches the slide below it and pushes the head of the sail out of the block, allowing the head to separate from the car and rotate down into the sail cover.
