This video, Part 2 of a series, details the process of removing the lower intake manifold from a 96-05 Chevy/GMC Astro/Safari 4.3L.
The creator highlights several key steps and challenges:
Accessing Fasteners (0:26-0:42): The AC compressor's four top mounting bolts need to be loosened and moved aside without discharging the AC system.
Power Steering Pump Bracket (0:46-1:04): The bracket holding the power steering pump also needs to be removed as it obstructs the lower intake manifold bolts, particularly on the driver's side.
Limited Clearance (1:10-1:30): Many fasteners in this region have very limited space, making them difficult to access and remove, often requiring patience.
Total Fasteners (2:41-2:48): There are a total of eight fasteners: four in the front and four in the rear.
Trickiest Side (2:50-3:22): The driver's side fasteners are described as the trickiest due to the need to move the AC compressor and its bracket, which prevent the bolts from clearing the manifold.
Passenger Side Preparations (3:34-4:22): On the passenger side, it's necessary to disconnect the ground wire to the alternator (attached to the thermostat housing), the upper radiator hose, and another thinner hose connected to the thermostat housing.
Breaking the Manifold Free (4:46-6:14): The most challenging part is breaking the manifold free. The creator used a sharp razor blade to cut the gasket material near the distributor and then a skinny, long-handled screwdriver to pry it loose. This process requires significant effort.
Final Checks (6:14-6:23): Before fully removing, ensure all rubber hoses and the alternator ground wire are disconnected.
