Brahms Academic Festival Overture, Op. 80, composed by Johannes Brahms (1833-1897), transcribed for organ by Edwin Henry Lemare (1865-1934)

This organ transcription was performed by organist Jinhee Kim and percussionist Brian McNulty at Auer hall, Indiana University on December 14, 2013.

Edwin Henry Lemare, who transcribed this piece, was a very well-known performer and composer for the organ in England and America in the late Romantic period. Lemare said, “My great aim for the last 10 years has been to raise the organ to its proper position as a solo instrument. I was one of the first seriously to fight the cause of introducing modern orchestral works in the form of transcriptions for the organ” Lemare’s prolific transcriptions enabled many American people to listen to European symphonic orchestra works in their local concert halls.
