Once, from the dense forests, a hunter managed—after great effort—to capture a terrifying and ferocious lion. He brought it, unconscious, to the royal court of the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb in Delhi, where the lion was locked in a massive iron cage. Enclosed in the cage, the lion kept roaring ferociously again and again.

Upon seeing the lion in the court, Aurangzeb, filled with pride, boasted, “There is no fiercer lion than this one!” His courtiers, acting like his obedient slaves, readily agreed with him.

However, Maharaja Yashwant Singh of Jodhpur disagreed. He said, “We have an even more powerful lion than this.” These sharp words, like poisonous arrows, infuriated Emperor Aurangzeb. He challenged Yashwant Singh, “If you truly have a lion more powerful than this one, then let it fight mine. But if your lion loses, you shall be beheaded.”

Maharaja Yashwant Singh accepted the challenge without hesitation.

The next day, a grand event was organized within the fort for the lion fight, drawing a massive crowd. Aurangzeb took his seat, and Maharaja Yashwant Singh sat beside his twelve-year-old son, young Prithvi Singh.

Aurangzeb asked Yashwant Singh, “Where is your lion?”

Yashwant Singh calmly replied, “Don’t worry, my lion is right here. You may begin the fight.”

Aurangzeb gave the order, and his lion was released from the iron cage.

Then it was time for Maharaja Yashwant Singh’s lion.

To everyone’s shock, Yashwant Singh instructed his twelve-year-old son, Prithvi Singh, “Go into the cage and fight Aurangzeb’s lion on our behalf.”

Everyone present was stunned by what they were witnessing. Obeying his father’s command, young Prithvi Singh bowed to his father and entered the lion’s cage.

The lion looked at the boy, and the moment its eyes met the fearless, radiant gaze of Prithvi Singh, it cowered and backed away in fear. The entire audience was amazed.

Mughal soldiers then provoked the lion with spears. Finally, enraged, the lion pounced at Prithvi Singh.

As the lion charged, the boy swiftly dodged, then drew his sword. Seeing his son pull out the sword, Yashwant Singh shouted, “Son, what are you doing? The lion has no weapon, then why will you fight with a sword? This is not a righteous war!”

Hearing his father’s words, Prithvi Singh threw the sword aside and charged at the lion barehanded. After a fierce struggle, the brave boy tore the lion’s jaws apart with his bare hands, and then ripped its body into pieces.

Everyone began cheering and praising the heroic young boy, Prithvi Singh. As he emerged from the cage, drenched in the lion’s blood, his father ran to him and embraced him tightly.

(It is said that the wicked and deceitful Mughal emperor later gave clothes laced with poison as a gift to Prithvi Singh. Upon wearing them, the brave young boy tragically lost his life.)
