Dream vegie patch built by photographer in lockdown | Growing fruit and veg | Gardening Australia
Lockdown meant a dream vegie patch became a reality for nature photographer, David Trood.

David has been travelling the world for 35 years, creating images that inspire people to connect with nature. But in 2020, he was stuck at home like the rest of us! David says, “That ended up being a good thing because it gave me the opportunity to fulfil a dream I’ve had for a long time of having a garden that I can grow my own wonderful, colourful, natural, fresh, organic food.” David set work building raised garden beds, a greenhouse and shed to accommodate lots of food production and experimentation, to counter the issue of food security that became more pertinent during lockdown. “It all began with a bare hill and an idea. A weedy hill actually, secluded deep in the Australian bush far away from any town and even further from a city. When I moved back to Australia from Denmark about 18 months ago, I knew pretty much zilch about gardening. Started by putting up an electric fence to keep the cows out.” “The photographer part of me has still been using all this camera gear that I’ve been accumulating over the years so now I can share my weedy garden on YouTube with people all over the world. Hopefully, they’ll want to get their hands dirty too.” “When I began the journey, a whole new world opened up to me.” David beautifully captured all the happenings in his garden from the caterpillars munching on broccoli leaves, to germination of seeds, to the mice running through seedlings at night, helping him to understand how things work and appreciate all the “cogs in the cycle of life.” “I hope it inspires you to get out in the garden to connect, to enjoy, to make your own slice of paradise. It’s real simple.”
