Ideas For Using Reverb On Guitar In Your Band [Spring, Swell, Plate, Hall, Room & More]

In this video we revisit perhaps our favourite effect of all: reverb. We’ve done many shows on different reverb types and applications… but here we are putting it into musical context with some band jams.
We run through the common 'spring', 'plate', 'room' and 'hall' reverbs, before heading into swells, shimmers and reverse ‘verbs to really get those creative juices flowing.
For sure the musical style may not be to your tastes, but we really hope it can nevertheless spark ideas of how you can take some of these tones into music that you actually do like.

A note from me (Mick here). I’m going to get an ungodly kicking in the comments for my guitar being so out of tune in the jam. I’m really sorry - it’s a brand-new guitar, I didn’t set it up and I just couldn’t wrangle it in during the jam. Insert excuses here…. Erm, nobody died. Except me, inside. Ha!

How did we record the band?
The drums are mic’d in the Glyn Johns method (Neumann TLM102 as the overheads), plus an extra snare mic (Beyerdynamic M201) underneath. The bass is DI’d via an Ampeg SVT DI (full bass rig below), the guitar cabs are mic’d as usual (with Austrian Audio OC18), plus our stereo room mics (AKGC414XL). There’s plenty of spill all around the mics in the room.
Everything hits our UA Apollo interfaces for recording and I mixed it (Mick here) using the Universal Audio Luna DAW.
