Does a DIY Fireplace Heat Exchanger Actually Work? (Real Results)
Here is my original DIY fireplace heat exchanger build video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bdIfsU3-Oks
4" Centrifugal Fan: https://amzn.to/4rShJK6
Firewood Grate Deep (in video): https://amzn.to/4pJZt5a
Firewood Grate Shallow: https://amzn.to/3MCK1sI
Creosote Log: https://amzn.to/3MGIZwa
I built a fireplace heat exchanger. Does it actually work? Two months ago I built a custom DIY fireplace heat exchanger using 1-1/2" black gas pipe to capture wasted heat and turn our closed-in porch into a four-season room. Since that video, I’ve had a ton of comments and questions — so here’s the full update.
In this follow-up I:
-Answer the most common viewer questions (safety, airflow, PVC/Fernco concerns, fresh air, dampers, inserts vs wood stoves)
-Show how the exchanger is holding up after ~60 days of hard use
-Explain why airflow / static pressure is the real key
-Upgrade the fan to a 4" centrifugal (squirrel cage) fan and demo it in action
-Show real-world temperature checks (pipes hitting 400°+ and back pipes often 700–800° when it’s really cooking)
This setup is AIR ONLY — no liquid heat exchange — and it’s built from readily available parts from Menards / Home Depot / Lowe’s. Total cost was roughly $300–$350 initially, and the upgraded fan was about $170 (10-year warranty). Comparable factory units that didn’t fit my fireplace were $700+.
If you’ve got more questions, drop them in the comments — I’ll keep updating this project.
