Nintendo Finally Fixed a Mario-Sized Hole In the Switch Library
For more than a few years, people have been complaining about certain holes in Nintendo's online library for the Nintendo Switch. The lack of a a true Virtual Console to enjoy titles from the past has been a huge black eye for the company since the Switch Launched. In many ways the Wii and Wii U had better eShops. Well, Nintendo just plugged a huge, Mario-sized hole in the Switch Library, but why they waited until now is a bit perplexing.
What we got:
Baseball
Alleyway
Super Mario Land
These are three of the greatest early games for the original Game Boy, and games they should have released long ago. The fun thing is these all have Mario in them, so why they didn't release these games in time for MAR10 Day is just a huge miss in my opinion.
To get these games, you simply need to have the Standard Switch Online subscription; that's right, no expansion pass needed here. Simply go and update your Game Boy app and the games will show in the top of the screen.
One of the fun things that Nintendo has done with these releases is to provide the Super Game Boy palette (or it could be the Game Boy Color) to these games. This means you get a splash of color if you happen to have that feature enabled during your gameplay. This definitely raises the bar for some, but having that good 'ole black and green also hits the nostalgia mark.
I still don't understand why it took so long to get these games added, especially since they were among the first to be released for the system. Regardless, I am thrilled there are here now and definteiyl plan on playing all three of these. Which game is your favorite out of these, Super Mario Land, Alleyway, or Baseball? I think most will say Mario Land, but there's something to be said for the others. With the Switch 2 being announced later in Nintendo's 2024 fiscal year, I'd like to see the library bolstered a lot more before the Switch, Switch Lite, and Switch OLED are sunset.
