Hava Nagila - The Original, & Unaltered Hasidic Melody
http://www.danielgil.org/
Air violin anyone? Seriously though, this is it, the original melody for Hava Nagila that Idelsohn/Nathanson changed, and then added words to. They took this melody and made it a pop tune according to their time period. They did this by limiting the modal content of the A section, and also by limiting the interplay/change of modes in the B section. The third C section of the Idelsohn/Nathanson version is the most similar to the original melody found in the Kiselgof archive. The original C section is slightly changed in the Nathanson/Idelsohn version in both rhythm and melody, yet the Idelsohn/Nathanson version does seem to orbit the same mode as the original.
I found this, the true and original version of Hava Nagila, in the Kiselgof archive. Most scholars feel that it was originally a slow song, that was adapted to be a fast song. This is false, as the tempo is originally marked "A Freilichs." This means it was performed at a fast tempo and literally translated, “A Freilichs” means “happy” dance song. That implies that most likely it was used much in the same way it is used today, as a fast dance song employed for dancing at weddings, Bar/Bat mitzvahs etc. The notion that Idelsohn/Nathanson changed the original version of Hava Nagila from a somber meditative song into a happy dance song, is a myth which is simply untrue.
It is interesting to note that Idelsohn/Nathanson had the same source as I do, the Kiselgof archive.
