Putting my dog down 10 22 2018

On Monday, October 22nd, 2018, me and my wife had to make one of the hardest decisions ever by choosing to put our beloved dog and companion, Bear to rest. On that same day, Bear collapsed at home right in front of my wife, and began breathing heavily, whilst drooling.

This happened right before we were getting ready to head out and drop my wife off to work. He couldn’t even stand or walk at this point. I took him directly to the vet, hoping it was something simple, like a turned stomach, and they took a X-Ray and Ultrasound of his abdominal area. What I was told next, hurt me to the core.

Bear had a tumor on his spleen that became enlarged and ruptured. His gums and tongue was pale white from lack of blood flow due to the internal bleeding. The vet than informed me that he would most likely not live through the next 24 hours, unless surgery was conducted, or we chose euthanize him. He also informed me that, even if he went through surgery, he would more than likely only live another 6-8 months, and that the surgery was very expensive (around 4-5k).

I paced back and forth in tears in the room, and contacted my wife on what we should do. We’ve already been facing financial burdens, and as bad as we wanted to keep Bear around a little while longer, we had no choice. So I informed the vet, that we should let him have his rest and take him from this pain.

I sat with Bear for a couple of hours before we made the final decision...and it was truly a tough one. But at least he is no longer in pain or suffering. You will forever be and my (daddy) and Jennifer’s (mommy) heart. We love you Bear...
