DETAILS ON THE HEATING SYSTEM:

The client's leaking system was a five-year-old Utica Steam Boiler. And to be precise, it was the steam pipes that were leaking, not the boiler itself. The boiler was holding up, but the steam pipes and radiators throughout the house were not - they were installed in the the late 1950's, and many of the pipes had rusted internally.

This caused a buildup of rust particles in the boiler, which caused boiling water to back flow up the condensate return pipe. In layman's terms, a thick scab of rust particles built up inside the boiler and forced the pressure to release the wrong way. This happened over and over until the pipes were rusty enough to start leaking.

The way the math broke down financially meant that it would be cheaper in the long run to replace the whole system. Joe Addario recommended the newly redesigned 2021 IBC High Efficiency wall hanging Combination Boiler and a new two zone forced hot water baseboard system. Since that's a mouthful of terminology, let's break it down what it means.

The white rectangle is the IBC Boiler. It is a combination boiler because it can function as both the heating system AND the domestic hot water system. It replaces the old heating system and the hot water tank. The way it's able to accomplish so much is by cleverly directing the flow of boiling water through the system of copper pipes under the boiler.

There are two green and black zone pumps that direct the flow of water to the baseboard heaters upstairs. These baseboards are basically just a copper pipe covered in aluminum fins. Boiling water flows through the pipes, the aluminum fins conduct heat energy out of the water in the pipes, and the room heats up immediately.
