Oxide Feature Demo: External Subnets

Introducing External Subnets on Oxide: Multiple Public IPs per Instance (and Light Mode!)

In this episode, we introduce External Subnets, a new feature that lets you attach an entire subnet of external IP addresses to an instance so it can be reached via any IP in that subnet, as long as the guest OS is configured to bind/listen on those addresses. We compare External Subnets to existing external IPs (ephemeral and floating), explaining that external IPs are NATed to the instance’s private VPC IP and are not visible inside the guest, while External Subnets require explicit in-guest IP configuration but provide true external reachability per address. We demo adding multiple external IPs from a /30, binding them in the OS, and show that an instance can have multiple external subnets attached. We also walk operators through creating subnet pools, adding members with min/max prefix lengths, linking pools to silos, and allocating subnets in the user console, noting BGP advertising requirements. Finally, we briefly show newly added light mode.
