The Adventures Of Dr. Franken SNES - No Passwords No Continues And 20 Stages Of Finding Body Parts

The Adventures Of Dr. Franken on SNES is genuinely one of the strangest games I have brought to Game Forest GF and I think the story alone makes it worth talking about. It released in North America on December 1, 1993, developed by MotiveTime and published by DTMC, with Elite Systems handling the European release under the simpler title Dr. Franken.

The plot here is wonderfully absurd. Frankie, our Frankenstein's monster hero, is planning a trip to New York City with his girlfriend Bitsy. The problem is he can only afford one plane ticket. His solution is to take Bitsy apart, pack her body parts into several suitcases, and travel with her that way. Naturally something goes wrong and her pieces end up scattered across twenty different stages around the world. Frankie spends the entire game searching for four parts in each level and finding the exit before moving on.

This SNES version was actually a 16-bit remake of a Game Boy original called Dr. Franken that released in December 1992. The SNES version added bonus stages and updated visuals but several retro reviewers who played both versions, including The King Of Grabs blog, have said the Game Boy original was actually more fun than this enhanced SNES port. That is a rare reversal in gaming history where the smaller handheld version outshined its console upgrade.

There is also a genuinely sad footnote to this story. Elite Systems commissioned a separate NES version of Dr. Franken from a developer called Cygnus around 1993. According to a former Elite employee, the company was unhappy with Cygnus's work and considered finishing the game internally, but ultimately cancelled the entire project because they could see the NES market was dying in real time. That unreleased prototype was eventually found by collectors in the early 2000s. A sequel called Dr. Franken II released on Game Boy in 1997 through Jaleco, completing one of the more obscure little series in gaming history.

Drop a comment if you ever played either version of this one. Subscribe to Game Forest GF for retro gaming content every single day.
