2022 Morehead-Cain Discovery Weekend: Morehead-Cain Mentoring Program: Alumni and Scholar Panel

This event for recipients took place at the Morehead-Cain Foundation on March 5, 2022.

The Morehead-Cain Mentoring Program leverages the power of the Morehead-Cain network by matching each participating scholar with a handpicked alumni mentor, with matches based on shared interests and values. Join us for the Mentoring Program panel, featuring three mentor/mentee pairs discussing the relationships created and lifelong connections that are formed.

About the speakers

Mentoring Pair #1

Amir Barzin ’06 is the medical director for virtual care services and the UNC Clinical Contact Center for UNC Health. As the pandemic took hold in February of 2020, Amir helped develop the UNC Health response to the care of COVID-19 patients. He helped establish the UNC Respiratory Diagnostic Center (RDC) at the Ambulatory Care Center in Chapel Hill, where he has served as the incident commander. During his work at the RDC, Amir was asked to develop the Carolina Together Testing Program—a UNC testing initiative launched in January 2021 to safely assess and test asymptomatic University members as a means to limit the spread of COVID-19.

Frances Reed ’22 is a graduating senior studying environmental health sciences in the Gillings School of Global Public Health. Her long-term goal is to follow in her mentor’s footsteps and become a primary care physician. While applying to medical school, she plans to work as a field instructor in wilderness therapy in Utah. The connections between food, the environment, and health are endlessly fascinating to her, and she is so grateful for the opportunities the Morehead-Cain has given her to explore these connections.

Mentoring Pair #2

Lakshmi Murty Goudar ’99 is an adult endocrinologist in Norfolk, Virginia. After receiving her bachelor’s degrees from Carolina in psychology and chemistry in 1999, she worked in the private consulting sector for a few years before pursuing medical school back at the University. The double alumna received her MD in 2007, followed by an internal medicine residency at Duke University Medical Center (2007–2010) and an endocrinology fellowship at Eastern Virginia Medical School (2010–2012).

Jaya Mishra ’22 is a global studies major with a concentration in global health. She plans to graduate this spring with minors in neuroscience and Hindi. Jaya has spent her summers backpacking in Maine, researching accessibility in Toronto, and working on Merck's Global and U.S. vaccine policy team in Washington, D.C.

Mentoring Pair #3

Brian Strong ’00 is the global head of communications for Bloomberg Media, where he leads a cross-geography team responsible for the internal and external voice of the business on new product launches, flagship events, financial growth, and employee culture across a multitude of platforms. Bloomberg’s New Economy Forum for world leaders and its Quicktake streaming network are among his key focus areas. Prior to Bloomberg, Brian was senior vice president of brand communications at FOX Sports, leading brand storytelling strategy connected to the company’s key sports and entertainment moments, digital platforms, marketing campaigns, and special projects.

Kene Ochuba ’25 is a first-year student studying computer science with minors in business and entrepreneurship. In the future, he hopes to use his degree to either start a software company as an entrepreneur or work as a software engineer building programs and applications. The intersection between business and technology is something he is passionate about and hopes to incorporate both fields into his future career.
