Episode 175 Aishwarya Mishra, Swapping Software for Interior Design in Adelaide #TheNainaExperience
Aishwarya Mishra spent 12 years as a software test engineer - ending in a management role - before she enrolled at TAFE Adelaide and switched to interior design. She now runs Aishmi Design in Adelaide, working on residential projects from floor plan to site visit.
She was born in Odisha, grew up in Hyderabad. The career options available to her were doctor, engineer, accountant, or lawyer. She picked software, did it well, reached management, and then wanted out. Interior design was the natural next step. She enrolled at TAFE Adelaide and says the practical training there made her want to fight harder for her place in the industry.
Her design philosophy is centered on color. She's Indian - not scared of bold palettes or pattern - and says most of her client work is building enough trust to introduce both. She uses 3D renders to show people what a space can look like before they'll agree to any change. She describes the current state of Australian interiors as a "beige pandemic": white walls, gray walls, marble kept under plastic. Her counter is simple - you spend 60 to 70 percent of your time at home. It should make you feel something.
Her TAFE final project: a home designed for a client with a degenerative disease - deteriorating eyesight, eventual wheelchair use. She added color and high-contrast surfaces and made it feel like a home rather than a clinical space. National award finalist.
Skills carried from 12 years in software: fast adoption of new tools, time management, and client communication. She says software engineering has a role in everything she does in interior design now.
Seven years in Adelaide - two in Sydney before that. She says Adelaide's small market is an advantage for someone building a name. Everyone knows everyone. She's available for residential work and open to commercial inquiries.
