2023 Alpine A290 Beta Concept ⚡ Sports hatchback based on the new Renault 5

Alpine late on Tuesday took the covers off the A290 Beta, a concept car that previews the first member of the French performance marque's future electric fleet.

The A290 Beta is a small full-electric hatchback based on the coming Renault 5, but with a specially tuned chassis, more power, and a heavily modified body, as well as a race-themed interior.

Alpine already confirmed this has been done only for show, the car we see here is built on an FIA-approved chassis while the production car will be based on the Renault 5 and its Renault-Nissan Alliance CMF-BEV platform. While the Beta version of A290 has two electric motors on the front axle for extra poke, the production version will come with two power options.

Renault has not released technical specifications for the Alpine A290 Beta or production versions, but they will have multilink rear suspension, torque vectoring power delivery, and four-piston Brembo disc brakes.

Competition for the A290 is likely to come from the next-generation full-electric Mini, the Fiat New 500's Abarth version, and the upcoming Urban Rebel from Volkswagen Group's Cupra brand.

Production of the A290_β is set to begin in 2024 at ElectriCity in Douai, France. The electric engine for the A290_β will also be manufactured in France, at the Cléon Megafactory.

As for prices, it won’t be cheap, Purely because of the amount of modification that the standard Renault 5 will need to become A290, we should expect it to be pricier than Abarth 500e, that’s well north of €40,000.
