Why is Deutero-Isaiah in the Book of Mormon?
Why Is Deutero-Isaiah in the Book of Mormon?
The Book of Mormon claims that Lehi left Jerusalem around 600 BC, taking with him the brass plates—records that included the writings of Isaiah up to that point in history.
But there’s a problem.
Isaiah chapters 40–55—often called Deutero-Isaiah—are widely understood by biblical scholars to have been written after the Babylonian exile, decades after Lehi and his family had already left.
And yet… those exact chapters show up in the Book of Mormon.
In this episode, we walk through:
What the Book of Mormon actually claims about the brass plates
Where Nephi says he’s getting his Isaiah material
Why scholars date Isaiah 40–55 to the exilic/post-exilic period
The internal tension this creates in the text
And the apologetic responses—and what they require you to accept
This isn’t about fringe theories or obscure arguments.
This is one of the clearest places where the timeline simply doesn’t line up.
So the question becomes:
How did post-exilic Isaiah end up in a pre-exilic record?
