Andalusian Classical Music

Andalusian classical music is an ancient tradition dating back to almost 1200 years ago. It's an indigenous musical style of 'Islamic Iberia' (al Andalus) with influences from pre-Islamic Iberian traditions, the middle-east and north-Africa. This musical style was brought to north-west-Africa by the Andalusian refugees who fled Iberia after the fall of the kingdom of Granada, and as well by the moriscos who fled to north-west-Africa during the spanish inquisition. The music in this video is of the Andalusian musical school of "al Ala", which only survived in Morocco. Other schools of Andalusian classical music are found in Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia.

The video begins with a piece from "nuba al Hiyaz al Mashriqi". This is a long symphony with multiple "inshad" (= chants) in between to form one big piece. In total this forms a small part of the entire "nuba". After that a taqsim (oud solo) from "nuba Iraq al 'Ayam" is played, followed by a short symphony, an "inshad" and 3 fragments of the same "nuba". All together they also form a small part of the entire "nuba". The last audio piece is a poem of which I don't have any specific information about. It could be that this poem itself originated from outside of al-Andalus and became part of the tradition or vice-versa. I do know it is played according to Andalusi tradition.

This music was played and recorded by "Omar Metioui Ensemble" with the leading artist (and musicologist) of Tanger, Omar Metioui, to which all credit belongs.
