Not All Knee Pain Means Knee Arthritis | Dr. Venuthurla Ram Mohan Reddy | Yashoda Hospitals

A 58-year-old patient visited my clinic with persistent knee pain and was previously advised total knee replacement for arthritis. However, on thorough clinical examination and after reviewing his history, we found he had undergone a 𝗵𝗶𝗽 𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝟭𝟱+ 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘀 𝗮𝗴𝗼.

Surprisingly, his knee joint was not severely arthritic. Further investigations (X-rays & CT scan) revealed that his 𝗵𝗶𝗽 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗵𝗮𝗱 𝗹𝗼𝗼𝘀𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗱, and this was triggering referred pain to the knee.

This is because the same nerve supplies both the hip and knee joints—so hip issues can mimic knee pain.
We performed a 𝗿𝗲𝘃𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗵𝗶𝗽 𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁, and remarkably, the knee pain disappeared completely.
This case is a reminder: 𝗗𝗼𝗻’𝘁 𝗷𝘂𝗺𝗽 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗴𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝗱𝗲𝗰𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗿 𝗲𝘃𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻. Always consult a specialist, understand the root cause, and seek a second opinion when in doubt.
It’s not always what it seems—𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗱𝗶𝗮𝗴𝗻𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘀 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁.
