In July 2018, Sgt. 1st Class Christopher Celiz led a special operations mission in Paktia Province, Afghanistan. When his team was ambushed and a medevac helicopter came under fire, Celiz stepped into the open — and into enemy bullets — to protect the crew and his men.
Though mortally wounded, he stood his ground until the helicopter lifted off safely.
He died that day. But because of him, others lived.
Celiz was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor in 2021.
He now rests at Beaufort National Cemetery, South Carolina.
