How Alzheimer’s Could Be Treated With Functional MRI and Ultrasound | Feat. Dr. Sheldon Jordan

Leading neurologist Dr. Sheldon Jordan is pioneering the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease using functional MRI and ultrasound technology.

There are more than 6 million Americans now living with Alzheimer’s. This is projected to reach nearly 13 million by 2050, based on a 2021 U.S. dementia study.

Focused ultrasound, guided by regular magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), is currently approved to treat around 30 indications worldwide, including the tremors and dyskinesia of Parkinson’s disease.

Functional MRI, with its ability to map the connecting pathways between different parts of the brain, stands to open up the treatment possibilities further. Dr. Jordan has witnessed its strong potential for treating Alzheimer’s.

“We’ve had patients with Alzheimer’s disease on a particular type of medication that helps break down some of these toxic proteins,” he said. “So [with focused energy] they can be eliminated better.”

On VitalSigns, Dr. Jordan joins host Brendon Fallon to highlight the advantages functional MRI has over regular MRI in expanding the understanding and treatment of brain diseases.
