Night Blooming Cereus - Photographs by Paul Kosinski

You first know it's going to bloom when an incredible fragrance begins to fill the house. Strong, sweet and unique. Then you search and find the first opening bloom. It's night and there will only be a few hours to enjoy the sight and smell. The moment the bloom starts to fade, the fragrance disappears completely.

Our cutting came from a cousin, a descendant of Henry Bicker Gibson. It grows quickly and ours bloomed within a couple years. The trick seemed to be ignoring it, a technique I was good at. But I felt so guilty about it being so pot-bound that I finally repotted it into a nice, large pot. It's never bloomed again. That was seven years ago.
