An observation of deer breeding on my property: Myth of the Lockdown
Many hunters believe there is a time during the rut when deer do not move as much during the rut. The theory most often espoused is that there are so many does in estrus as the rut progresses that something called a "Lockdown" occurs, That is, various bucks, especially, according to the theory, mature ones, get hooked up with a hot doe and stay with her for a couple of days. In fact, it very well may be that a buck tags along with a doe in estrus for a couple of days, but it is not true that they move less. However, it may be the case that the buck moves differently. Since he is trying to stick with her, he goes where she goes, which may not be typical pre- and post-rut buck movement. In fact, he begins to follow a doe movement pattern. Many skilled trophy hunters and mature buck hunters tend to set up along traditional pathways used by bucks to move from one territory to another, which are often different than the pathways used by does. Many hunters also hunt the edges of buck bedding spots, which also are different than doe bedding areas. So the more bucks that hook up with does, the more likely they are to follow different patters as they tag along with the doe. In fact. gps studies show that there is NOT less movement of deer during the peak of the rut (nor during the so-called October Lull) (see link below). My theory is that (using rut timing of Michigan as an example) both the October Lull and the Rut Lockdown occur because hunters pressure their properties too0 much both in the early weeks of hunting season and as the rut commences, so deer are less likely to move in this area. Combine this with changed movement of bucks as they hook up with does, and some hunters may sense that deer movement has decreased IT DOES NOT. If you do not pressure your property too much and hunt locations where does feed and or travel you should see consistent deer movement all season long, and if you are very careful and have good habitat all day long as well. The October Lull and Lockdown are both myths and it is a shame that they are still promulgated by professional hunters who should know better.
