What Justice Looks Like for a Child Soldier Turned Rebel Warlord

A Ugandan warlord from one of Africa’s most notorious rebel movements was sentenced to 25 years in prison by the International Criminal Court. Dominic Ongwen was a commander in the Lord's Resistance Army - or LRA - whose fugitive leader Joseph Kony is one of the world's most-wanted war crimes suspects. Abducted himself as a child, Ongwen’s defense was that he was entirely under Kony’s control. In a war where children were forced to murder their parents, the lines between victim and perpetrator are blurred. VICE News meets with northern Ugandans who knew Ongwen themselves and ask if this is the moment to finally put the LRA behind them?

In a previous version of this film, we stated that Lucy Ajok was injured after being captured by Ugandan government forces. She actually says she was injured by the Lord’s Resistance Army whilst trying to escape. VICE News regrets the error.
