Prices do fluctuate for games, consoles, and pcs. What I list as a price now won’t be the same price in half a year or two. We are going to assume you buy the same amount of games regardless of system, pc, xbox, ps5. And that you’re buying either an xbox series x, ps5 with disc drive, or a similarly spec-ed as possible PC. Eventually you’ll have to add more storage since games take up a ton of space. We’ll also assume you want online play.

So let’s do a price breakdown. The Xbox series X and PS5 each cost $500. On the other hand, a comparable PC would cost you over a thousand dollars. Wow. PC Gaming is expensive right? It only looks that way initially. Let’s move onto other parts of consoles, or PC ownership that costs money. Games. Games for this new generation of video game consoles are going to cost up to $70. But, if you look at the exact same game on PC, they are still $60. But, we know most people don’t buy video games at full price. So let’s adjust for that. I normally see steeper sales for PC games, and with console games having less price cuts. So, this is a guess, But I’d say the average PC gamer spends $35 on a game and with the price hike on console games, about ~$45 per console game. I purchase about 4 games a year. The average video game console generation lasts 7 years. So, let’s assume you purchase 4 games each of those years for a total of 28 games. For PC that’s a total of $980 and for Xbox and Playstation 5, around 1260.

The “Typical gamer” is bound to pay around the same amount regardless of system, $2300-$2400. You’ll notice the main factor here is the cost of games, and online memberships. The additional storage cost is pretty much the cost of the Xbox external storage unit, and a NVMe drive for the PC and PS5. Now let’s take a look at the big gamers. I added more storage for each system and also adjusted the price of the games to be a little less and now the PC is the least expensive at $3,000 and the consoles cost $3,500. So if you like to play a ton of games you’ll end up paying less with a PC and this difference grows the more and more games you buy. PCs are the least expensive with the most games, what about the opposite? A casual gamer. This is the type of person I viewed, would buy the console 3-4 years after it’s released, and buy the console when there is a sale. They only occasionally need online play and buy online play and extra controllers on sale. They also wait for games to be on a great sale before buying, only buys the games they really really care about and would rather delete no-longer played games off their system than to buy additional storage. From this you can see that the PS5 and Xbox Series X would cost 25% less than the PC. That’s significant.

The upfront cost of a PC is more. But, the more games you buy, the less and less expensive PC gaming gets due to lower prices of games themselves and no cost for online play. But for more casual gamers, owning an xbox or ps5 will probably save you some money, but that higher cost for games and online play membership adds up the more into gaming you get. Is there a perfect video gaming machine? No. Were my numbers for this perfect? No. But I at least hope this helped you figure out the best one for you and helps you make the best purchasing decision for yourself. There is no best system. There’s only what works best for you within your own budget. Because Like I said at the beginning of this video. It’s a fantastic time to be into video games and depending on your needs, one of these is probably a great option for you.
