Batman '66 Reunion 1989 with Adam West, Julie Newmar Cesar Romero and Burgess Meredith

A 1989 Batman '66 Cast Reunion. What I love most about this interview is when Adam West, Julie Newmar, Cesar Romero and Burgess are discussing the upcoming 1989 Batman film (starring Michael Keaton and Jack Nicholson). People often ask what Burgess' thoughts were on that film. Imagine, it was a pretty huge deal at the time, because up until that point the original 1966 Batman show was the single, definitive version of Batman - so to have a new motion picture coming out was HUGE. The biggest point of contempt with the older generation was the fact that thematically it was the polar opposite of the TV series. The young people on the other hand were so excited. The excitement and anticipation was so great that it was titled "Batmania of 1989".

Burgess was the FIRST person from the original cast to defend the new Batman picture and I am so glad this interview exists to prove that - and this was even before he saw it! The LA Batman premiere was THE EVENT of the year and was held on June 19th 1989 at Mann's Village Theatre in Westwood. The entire core cast of the 1967 Batman series was invited and Burgess was the only person from the cast to attend. My mother, who was his date, said that Burgess was absolutely shocked by how many people came up to him to express how much his Penguin character meant - including very kind words from Michael Keaton. When he entered the auditorium, he received a standing ovation - a moment that really touched him deeply. He thought the movie was very well done and described it as "artistic".

He was of the mindset that life is ever-evolving and he was always fascinated and interested in what the young people of the day were interested in (I have so many stories about this!). He approached life, in general, with a child-like curiosity and always with a touch of humor.

Everything about this interview is just so typical of my grandfather and his humor.
