Zorin OS DESTROYS Windows as 3.3 Million People Delete Microsoft From Their Lives in 2026
3.3 million people deleted Windows from their computers in the last six months. Not developers. Not tech enthusiasts. Office workers, retirees, small business owners, grandmothers. And they all landed on the same operating system — one built by two teenage brothers in a Dublin apartment as a school project in 2008.
This is the story of Zorin OS. And it is the biggest shift in personal computing in thirty years.
The trigger was October 14, 2025 — the day Microsoft ended free support for Windows 10. Within 48 hours, Zorin OS recorded 100,000 downloads. 72% came directly from Windows machines. By January 2026 the number hit 2 million. By mid-April 2026 it reached 3.3 million. That trajectory is not organic growth. It is the direct, measurable consequence of one corporate policy decision landing on millions of people at the exact same moment.
But the October deadline was not the cause. It was the detonator. The explosive had been building inside Windows 11 for four straight years. Ads in the Start Menu. Ads in File Explorer. Background processes nobody authorized. Telemetry collecting behavioral data by default. Settings users deliberately chose being silently reset after routine updates. Forced Microsoft account requirements to set up a computer the user already paid for. And then Recall — the AI system that continuously screenshotted everything happening on your machine and stored it in an unencrypted database that security researchers showed malware could walk straight into and read every password, every banking page, every private conversation.
Microsoft's own leadership eventually admitted publicly that Windows 11 had gone completely off track. Those were their exact words. Off track. By then, 3.3 million people had already made their decision.
So why Zorin OS over Ubuntu, Linux Mint, or Fedora? Because Artyom and Kyrill Zorin, the Irish-Ukrainian brothers who built this system, made one design decision nobody else was willing to make. They built Linux for people who are terrified of Linux. The taskbar sits at the bottom. The Start Menu opens from the bottom left. Right-click behaves exactly the way Windows users expect. Win+E opens the file manager. These are not cosmetic choices. They are engineering decisions built around the muscle memory of people who spent fifteen to twenty years on Windows.
A survey of 50,000 new Zorin accounts found that 43% of switchers are over 50 years old. 61% describe themselves as non-technical. 83% had never used any Linux distribution before. Margaret Hoffman, a 63-year-old retired teacher from Ohio, switched because her 2017 laptop couldn't meet Windows 11 requirements. After four months she described Zorin with one word — peaceful. James Okafor, an IT consultant in Atlanta managing 280 computers for 31 small business clients, ran the math: new compatible hardware costs $800 to $1,200 per machine. Zorin costs nothing. For a business with 20 computers that is up to $24,000 saved. He has personally migrated 190 machines since September 2025.
Zorin OS 18.1 launched April 15, 2026. Windows desktop market share has now dropped below 55% for the first time since reliable tracking began. The city of Vicenza in Italy began migrating 900 municipal computers to Zorin in April 2026. And every feature users hate about Windows — the ads, the telemetry, the Copilot bloat — exists because it profits Microsoft. They cannot remove it without dismantling their quarterly earnings. Users have figured that out.
3.3 million of them already voted.
👉 Watch till the end — because Zorin OS 18.1 just became the most dangerous thing to happen to Microsoft in a generation.
