How I Paint Things - Dark Age Infantry ft. The Army Painter

If you're stuck for colour choices, taking a look at what reenactors are wearing can help point you in the right direction. Most historical groups or 'living site' resources such as the Bärnau-Tachov History Park (at https://www.geschichtspark.de/en/ ) will provide a wealth of information on what would be accurate for remarkably specific periods, and even more is available with just a couple of clicks to a search engine. I've been lucky enough to visit Bärnau-Tachov myself, and was surprised to discover there was far more colour in clothing a thousand years ago than I'd long believed!
