Why I don't teach Hands-on Adjustments in a 200 Hour Yoga Teacher Training 🧐
Why don’t I teach a ton of hands-on adjustments in 200-hour trainings?
Because honestly, new teachers already have so much to juggle. they’re already a little panicked or a little over confident (you know who you are 🤣) they’re multitasking sequencing, public speaking, demoing, reading the room, playing a DJ set, motivational speaking, avoiding knocking over water bottles - and trying not to have an existential crisis mid-class.
oh, and now hands on adjustments from someone with likely less than 20-30 hours of anatomy and biomechanics knowledge? (Especially if you didn’t complete your 200 hours with me, I’ll be bold here and say most programs secretly underprepare you for the job of teaching physical movement)
sorry y’all, it’s gonna be a no from me.
cranking out cookie cutter adjustments just you think you’re supposed to turns them into an afterthought rather than an effective tool.
it’s worth the wait until teachers have some experience under their belts. First, develop confidence in seeing your students, in looking and listening, asking and respecting, gathering data, understanding movement, and refining your ability to support through clear cues and presence. Over time, this is what builds that strong foundation for hands-on work that’s actually intentional and effective, rather than just another thing to micromanage.
What’s been your experience with hands-on adjustments—as a teacher or a student? Love em? Hate em?
