American Bison
In honour of the 150th Anniversary of Confederation, Hinterland Who’s Who is releasing special videos about some of our most iconic wildlife and their impact on our country’s history and culture.
The next featured species is the American Bison! Historically, bison could be found in Canada from the grasslands and woodlands of the Prairie Provinces to the eastern foothills of the Rocky Mountains and up into the rugged Yukon. For thousands of years, the Indigenous peoples who shared the land with the bison built their very existence around it. It would then have been hard to imagine that these great herds could ever be depleted, but the American Bison almost went extinct in the late 1800s. It has since increased in numbers thanks to conservation efforts. We can support healthy herds of bison by protecting and expanding the natural areas they roam!
