15 months SOBER update - tips to cut back on alcohol or, to quit drinking completely!
I quit drinking a year ago and I've vowed to stay off it for another five years! Talking through my best tips to help you to help you to cut back on alcohol or to quit drinking completely if that's your goal!

When I was a teenager I certainly drank too much, I was a binge drinker, as is very common in Ireland (statistics back this up, I'm not generalising). Then in my 20s I calmed down a bit and had a limit on my drinking - two glasses of wine. Over the past few years I noticed myself drinking more regularly and worse still, drinking way too much when I would drink. I blacked out three times that I can recall in 2018 (puking, screaming, no idea where I was or what was happening etc - that level of drunk). I don't know when or why I slid backwards in my drinking habits...it came on slowly over the past few years, and I didn't think I had issues for quite a while (defensiveness, I guess) but what I discovered through therapy was WHY drinking had become such an issue for me and why dark, buried trauma was coming out after one too many (which is private, but important to share as it might inspire some of you to pursue therapy!). I did still have a lot of fun when drinking - most of the time - but with those fun nights came the hangovers, the loss of time for goals and work, the shame, the health impacts on my mental and physical health (much of this impact is invisible until you're sober and realise how much of a big deal it was, or until you're older and it catches up on you).
