Alphabet and Google CEO Sundar Pichai delivered the keynote address at the 2026 Stanford University commencement, where over 100 graduates staged a walkout protesting Google's cloud computing contracts with the Israeli government. Despite the disruption, Pichai delivered his speech, urging students to embrace optimism and tackle difficult challenges.
Stanford Commencement and Protests
The Protest: As Pichai, a Stanford alumnus, took the stage at the June 14, 2026 ceremony, an estimated 100 to 200 graduating students stood up, unveiled Palestinian flags, blew whistles, and walked out.
The Speech: The demonstration was directed at Google's controversial Project Nimbus contract with the Israeli government. Pichai did not address the protest in his remarks, choosing instead to share personal advice and life principles with the Class of 2026.
The Message: He encouraged the graduates to "choose optimism," gravitate toward hard things, and define success on their own terms. You can read the full transcript of his address on the Google Official Blog
