How FARA Protects Americans from Foreign Influence Campaigns

The Foreign Agents Registration Act, better known as FARA, has been in the news a lot lately. Major political operatives, billionaire casino moguls, and even the head of a major U.S. think tank have all been accused of violating it.

Today FARA requires most people doing lobbying, public relations, or similar work on behalf of foreign interests to register with the Department of Justice – to provide regular disclosures about the work they’re doing.

These disclosures provide the public with a treasure trove of information about what foreign powers are doing to garner influence in the U.S. and to shape U.S. foreign policy for their own purposes.

It empowers, not just journalists, but ordinary Americans to search for their own public officials dealings with foreign agents, and what kind of compensation they're receiving for working as one.
