Making an embossing hammer
For those of you that don't know, silversmith forging hammers are used: for embossing, raising, planishing, and texturing. These are actually the four main hammering methods.
An embossing hammer is used to dome metal from the reverse side. The embossing hammer actually stretches the metal from the inside while supported on a sandbag, on a thick piece of lead or if we set it in a bowl with pitch.
This type of hammer can also be used for texturing. It leaves small, medium or large dimples (depending on the size of the hammer faces) on the outside of a metal form while it supported against a stake or on the inside of a form if it's supported in a bowl with pitch.
