How to Choose the Right Residency in Costa Rica. What Expats Need to Know!
Thinking about moving to Costa Rica but not sure which residency path actually fits your situation?
This is one of the biggest mistakes we see.
A friend, a Facebook group, or random online advice may point you toward a residency category that worked for someone else, but that does not mean it is the right path for you.
Costa Rica’s most common residency options include:
If you receive a qualifying lifetime pension:
At least US$1,000 per month
If you have stable non-pension income:
At least US$2,500 per month for two years
If you are making a qualifying investment:
At least US$150,000
And an important clarification:
Costa Rica’s Digital Nomad status is not residency and does not count toward residency.
Another practical tip:
If you are still in your home country, document preparation can often be easier before you move. If you are already in Costa Rica, that does not mean you cannot move forward.
The key is choosing the right category based on your actual circumstances.
