Susie Was A Real Wild Child + I Never Knew (1926) Savoy Orpheans with Ramon Newton
SUSIE WAS A REAL WILD CHILD { 0:00 } - vocalist Ramon Newton
I NEVER KNEW { 3:03 }
The Savoy Orpheans
HMV B5028 (16 and 4 March 1926, respectively)
Alas this record of the Orpheans in the Debroy Somers era is in marginal condition.
SUSIE WAS A REAL WILD CHILD is attributed to Leslie Sarony, who I always associate with far less raunchy humorous songs. The Orpheans first recorded it on 4 March at the same session as I NEVER KNEW, but with the vocal duo of Clem Faraci and Monty Wolf. The two takes from that occasion were 'Rejected' and SUSIE was recorded again on 16 March with Ramon Newton. His second take was used; though the label omits mention of a vocal refrain. The band went silent at the end but someone hit or dropped something at 3:00 whilst the microphone was open.
Both sides were recorded at HMV's Hayes factory where the two studios, A and B, were carry-overs from the mechanical recording days just a year before. The boxy acoustic rather robs the performance of I NEVER KNEW of its potential. It would have sounded better in the Small Queen's Hall: HMV's studio C from later in 1926 until around November 1931, after when (non-location) recording moved to the new three-studio complex in Abbey Road. It was known as the St John's Wood studios; and was officially opened on 12 November 1931 when Sir Edward Elgar conducted the London Symphony Orchestra before an audience of the great and the good in studio 1 (permanently fitted with seats and a performance rostrum). By then, the complex had been in use for several weeks: for example Ray Noble and Al Bowlly had recorded ‘Down Sunnyside Lane’ and ‘This is the Day of Days’ (HMV B.6091) in a two-tune session on 31 October in the smallest studio, number 3. The mid-sized Studio 2, later much used by The Beatles, was not commissioned until 1932; and 1 and 3 were soon much altered to obtain a better sound.
