Building my own logger with the power of NodeJS || DevDay 48
🎓 Hey everyone! I’m a 2nd-year CSE student at IIITK — welcome back to Focus & Flow, your cozy corner for study motivation and deep work sessions!
🚀 Day 48: Crafting a Custom Logger — Know What Your Server Knows
Today I built a simple yet powerful logger system to track every request hitting my handcrafted Node.js static file server. From IPs to timestamps, it’s all getting logged now — because observability matters, even in small projects.
🛠 What I learned and explored today:
📄 Created a logging utility using Node.js fs module
⏱ Logged method, URL, status code, and timestamp for every request
🧾 Stored logs neatly in a /logs directory for analysis
📦 Implemented async write streams to avoid blocking I/O
🔄 Learned the value of proper logging for debugging and monitoring
🎯 Focus for the day:
✔ Structuring a basic logging system from scratch
✔ Capturing meaningful request data
✔ Managing log file organization and access
✔ Reinforcing best practices in server-side development
💡 Realization of the day:
"A good logger is like a black box for your server — quiet when all is well, priceless when things go wrong."
🔗 Every log line brings clarity — understanding behavior, usage patterns, and potential issues, all from within your own code.
