Orthokeratinized and parakeratinized epithelium | Keratinized Oral Epithelium

The keratinized epithelium is of two types orthokeratinized and parakeratinized epithelium. In the orthokeratinized epithelium the surface layer does not contain any nuclei. While in the parakeratinized epithelium the surface layer stains for keratin but shrunken nuclei are present in cells.
The orthokeratinized epithelium mostly lines the vermilion zone of the lip and parts of gingiva. The hard palate is mostly parakeratinized while parts of gingiva has parakeratinized layer. In the areas covered by the lining mucosa such as floor of the mouth and buccal mucosa constant irritation either mechanical or chemical converts the normal non- keratinized epithelium into a parakeratinized epithelium.
