Vacuum Engine "GULPPIN"

“Gulppin” is a vacuum engine considerably larger than my tiny “Whiffin” ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jlrRbHjGZUk ). The heart of Gulppin is an air compressor cylinder of 2” bore (50mm actually), around which this engine was designed. As supplied, the cast iron cylinder bore was honed to a high degree of geometric accuracy which made it possible to turn a piston (also of cast iron) to a very close but easy running fit for a good seal with low friction, both of which are requisite for a successful vacuum engine. The frame or base of the engine was cast from aluminum by friend Bob Johnson, who also made the pattern. His casting machined nicely and gives the big cylinder a solid footing. He provided the flywheel casting as well. The length of the ready-made cylinder limited the stroke of the engine to a scant 1-5/8” (about 41mm). In spite of this relatively short stroke, the engine performs quite well. It starts from cold, runs quite comfortably in the 300 rpm range, but with a large flame does over twice that.
